With the advent of more Heroes Season Three traffic (hint: Sylar wins… or does he?), lo and behold, Yesterday’s Salad is once again on the up and up.  Credit also goes for the rush of readers for our Year in Pictures feature, a happy return to the consistent features that devotees of Yesterday’s Salad crave.  Which brings us to our word of the day: “lo”, or more appropriately, “lo!”

According to good old Noah Webster, “lo” is an interjection dating back to the 12th century, used to call attention or to express wonder or surprise, and it is often accompanied by its partner in crime, “[and] behold.”  In modern usage, “lo!” has a rich history, particularly as the title of a classic work on the unexplained by Charles Fort, which itself figured into a more recent work, “Chasing Vermeer” (reviewed here at YS). So too, it is easy to see where “lo!” could be better incorporated into modern usage; for instance, the film “There Will Be Blood,” adapted from Upton Sinclair’s “Oil!” could have been more simply titled “Lo! Oil!”, “Lo! Blood!”, or perhaps just “Lo!” Even this column could’ve started “Lo! With the advent of more Heroes Season Three traffic…”

I felt the need to elevate this comment on Haverstam’s most recent dispatch to a post — as I have yet to write anything dealing with such pertinent matters as “Heroes Season Three,” I’ll make due with a posting that is tangentially about the sublime “30 Rock.”

The sketch is pretty funny, along the lines of the other fake commercials that the show has featured in the last 10+ years (e.g. Three-legged Jeans, Gatorade Cookie-Dough Sport, KCF coleslaw shredder, and of course, Schmitt’s Gay). What’s notable is that these bits have often been much funnier than the “live” material on the show… while similar ‘commercials’ in the 70s (Super Bass-O-Matic, Creely’s Soup, Adopt John Belushi for Christmas) weren’t pre-recorded.

So too, there’s been a fair gnashing of teeth about how few of the modern SNL repertory players have gone on to have careers after leaving the show (case in point, Jimmy Fallon). However, the success of Will Ferrell in branching out beyond his SNL persona (occasionally), and Tina Fey’s ascendancy as the doyenne of comedy serve to bolster Haverstam’s point, I believe.

NOTE: This is a blog post dedicated to ridiculing Heroes, particularly Season 2 of Heroes. If this sounds despicable to you, don’t read this blog post. If it seems despicable to you and you’re going to read it anyway, please note that there are a few mistakes in the post – something that the author has admitted in the comments section. If you came here looking for information on Season 3 of Heroes, it’s not here, and it never will be. When someone says that they are going to fix something that doesn’t yet exist – with a gun – it’s usually safe to assume that that person is joking in some way, shape, or form.

For a few episodes, it seemed as if Heroes might rescue itself from the slow stupid suckage that has been its second season. This past week’s episode, however, plus another clause, was probably the single worst of Heroes’s’s’s short history. Probably, this is because it dealt not with a handful of worsening characters with worsening storylines, but two handfuls of worsening characters with worsening storylines.

Moreover, the show creators have not followed the advice that I offered in this post. A-hem:

  1. Ali Larter is not dead. Kill her. I don’t like her. I’m not sure anyone else does either.
  2. Hiro might as well still be stuck in ancient Japan, for all you are doing with him.
  3. Peter Petrelli is back, thank you for that. But instead of kicking ass, he is just turning into a dummy.
  4. Sylar is back to being a baddie, but instead of rediscovering his power, he has discovered how to be Darth Sidius.

In regards to number three on that list, let me just say that Peter is not the only character getting dumber by the episode. Everyone is getting dumber, if not in what they say and do then in what THEY DO NOT DO WITH THEIR SUPERPOWERS!
